The Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) bankruptcy was the second largest bankruptcy in US history, kickstarting a broader banking panic that was eventually quelled by extraordinary regulatory action. Nonetheless, SVB’s default continues to reverberate today because of the lessons for bankers, regulators, and policymakers. This session will explore the SVB implosion and show that there are, in fact, much broader lessons for corporate executives and investors.
Professor Roberts will provide a sneak peek into an exciting upcoming program title “Fixed income and credit market investing.” The program empowers participants to address the challenges and to take advantage of the opportunities. Our Speaker:
Michael Roberts
Professor of Finance, Wharton Business School
Michael R. Roberts is the William H. Lawrence Professor of Finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Professor Roberts earned his B.A. in Economics from the University of California at San Diego, and his M.A. in Statistics and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley.
His primary research is in the areas of banking and corporate finance, and more specifically capital structure, investment policy, payout policy, and security design. Recent work has examined issues at the intersection of macroeconomics and finance including the role of government borrowing in affecting the supply of credit to and investment behavior of corporations. His research has received several awards including two Brattle Prizes for Distinguished Paper published in the Journal of Finance, a Jensen Prize for best paper on Corporate Finance and Organizations published in the Journal of Financial Economics, and Best Paper awards at the Financial Management Association and Southwestern Finance Association annual conferences. Professor Roberts has served on nine journal editorial boards, including the Journal of Finance of which he was a co-editor.
